Jane Goodall Workshop Day 3

Today was our field trip and forest walk in Kalinzu National Forest.

Most Ugandans are afraid of the forest (sometimes for good reason) and can not afford a guide. Only four of the thirty teachers had ever been in the forest. Everyone was nervous and excited!

A goal of 'conserving' forests has replaced an aim of 'preserving' them. The result is that Ugandans are practicing sustainable use of forest resources.

In our lesson before the walk, we saw an example of pulped paper scraps bonded by cassava starch. Alice shows us the dried product, like cardboard, that could be used for bulletins.

The millipede is an excellent decomposer.

The fig tree has buttressed roots and is often found as a parasite - wrapped around another tree - eventually suffocating its host. This one stands alone.

Can you imagine going into the woods for the first time as an adult? There is so much to see!

Robert Mugabe (not the one from Zimbabwe) is our animated teacher and guide. He was quite interested in learning about Canada's bears.

Trekking through the tea crops:

The Black and White C....

This sweet girl was tending another important Ugandan resource. We have eaten a few meals of tender goat meat.

Beatrice is a fellow music lover. Everyone wanted a photo with the muzungus (whites).

With love from Jen
